CH300 Settlers Road Landslip Remediation Project00016

An active 5‑metre landslide, triggered by heavy rainfall in 2022, posed a risk of ground collapse and required stabilisation work to protect community safety and prevent further slope failure.

Project Scope

  • Pre-construction safety works
  • Slope scaling & stabilisation
  • Environmental controls
  • Soil nailing via rope access
  • Strip drains & weep holes
  • Fibrecrete
  • Meshing
  • Shotcrete

Key Challenges

Resolving unexpected ground conditions collaboratively, preventing the need for a redesign

When a large boulder was uncovered that was
still intact within the slope, Delaney Civil worked collaboratively with the client and designers to prevent this project from needing a redesign, which would have come at a large time and financial cost to the project. A solution was found, which included a controlled release of the boulder, however this then caused a change to the chainages, as the slope was no longer as per the design. Through our strong working relationship with the client and designers, Delaney Civil identified that the installation of fibrecrete would provide additional reinforcement of the mesh and rectify the uneven shape. The designers agreed that additional soil nails were required and together with these soil nails and the fibrecrete, the uneven shape was rectified without increasing the cost to the client.

Rope access slope remediation with various anchoring methods

This site could not be accessed from the ground level, it could only be accessed from the road level. The Delaney Civil team had to work from above the site, working down towards the ground level at the base of the Hawkesbury River. The original plant planned for the project could not reach the depth required and instead additional plant needed to
be bought in, including a wagon drill. The wagon drill was used to drill the soil nails that could not be reached by other plant. A range of anchoring methods were also employed for the rope access, including both live loads (excavators, utes) and dead loads (water tanks). This allowed the method to be adjusted depending on the location and maximised safety for the workers.

Ensuring the ongoing safety of the local community

Towards the completion of the project, the client identified that, while the location did not require
a road barrier, it would be preferable to have one installed. To ensure the ongoing safety of the
local community and in appreciation of the client’s concern for their residents, Delaney Civil installed the road barrier at no additional charge to the client as an act of goodwill. This road barrier will contribute to the ongoing safety of the local community who travel Settlers Road daily, as well as that of visitors to the area who mav be unfamiliar with the road conditions.

As an act of goodwill for our client, and to ensure the safety of the local community, we completed the project by installing a road barrier.
